The past decade, from 2010 to 2020, has seen a quickening of fuel burn reductions thanks to the introduction of many new fuel-efficient models, including the Airbus A320neo, Boeing 737 MAX, Airbus A350, and Boeing 787 families. Type certificated drones will require to meet the same safety systems standards in FAR, Part 8 - Protection Systems as outlined above. Design engineers are finding it challenging to adddress drone safety risk concerns.
Unmanned cargo aircraft (UCA) is one of the "replacement" design concepts being proposed for cargo operators. The concept is based on drone technology, in use for over 80 years. Today, in-service drones can be B737 sized, have large payload range envelopes, and overwater capability. They require additional ground capabilities to operate 24/7. The critical risk for using drones is the safety risk issue.
